We recently held a webinar on what’s changing in the newest version of SmartConnect and how it will affect on-premise deployment. During the call, we gave the attendees a chance to ask questions during the SmartConnect on-premise Q&A section.
As we move forward with launching the new SmartConnect, and all the upgraded features and functionality that come with it, we want to clearly communicate what this change actually means for our customers. Here are some of the questions we were asked during the Q&A.
SmartConnect On-Premise Q&A
While the updated Microsoft Access connector is not yet built, we have added it to our list as we develop new connectors for the latest version of SmartConnect.
Yes, you should be able to just use SmartConnect.com going forward. Your licensing still supports running both if you need to, but all connectors and features are the same, so most customers will prefer to only have one environment to maintain and one login process to understand.
Yes. Self-hosted customers can push as many records as they want, but your server will need more RAM and SQL storage for logs.
The initial release will not have agents, but agents may come later next year, only for on-prem file shares, and only if we find this is something many of our customers are asking for.
Yes, but it doesn’t have to be a dedicated web server. There will need to be a server always running that meets the required specs, but it does not need to be publicly accessible.
Right now, there is no requirement to migrate to the newest version, and the eOne team has not decided on a timeline for how long SmartConnect21 will be supported. SmartConnect21 will continue to be maintained for the foreseeable future, and an end-of-life plan is expected in Q2 of 2027.
The new API doesn’t have those limits, and eOne has complete control over it. It handles multi-threading, webhook flows, etc., so you will not run into the same issues you ran into before with real-time integrations.
SmartConnect18 is out of support already, and we recommend migrating to the newest version of SmartConnect available. If you are on the 2018 version, the migration path will have you move to SmartConnect21 before migrating to the newest version. You could also manually rebuild your integrations in the newest version if you want to bypass SmartConnect21 altogether. Reach out to our support team for guidance.
Yes, this is a feature we plan on having in the migration plan.
Yes, the NetSuite connector will be available upon release.
When you install Smart Connect, the config tool will be where you determine which server will be your web server, and you will choose where you want the service to be installed. We haven’t decided what the service is, but there will be something that needs to be always
running on a server to run the scheduler. It can be on the same server as the web server that’s running the UI, or it could be on a different server. You can install as many of them as you want, so you’re not limited to just one.
Yes. We have newer .NET requirements and some changes to what SQL Server versions we support. There will be a full list of prerequisites available at the time of release.
Yes, that is on the roadmap and will likely debut early in 2027.
Yes, you will be able to have both running while you are migrating over to the newest version of SmartConnect.
Yes, the CRM connector has moved to a REST-based OData connection. This means on the back end, we’re setting things up differently, but from a UI perspective, it is the same. If you’d like to see more specifics on the updates to the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central and CRM connectors, you can view the recording of our SmartConnect Office Hours sessions.
We are still investing in our on-prem customers, so you will not have to move online to use the latest version of SmartConnect.
