When logging into a Dynamics GP company, I am receiving an error that says, “Microsoft Dynamics GP Extender needs to update its cache with new product details. This may take a few minutes.” The error screen looks like this; however, I am not sure what this means, or what caused it?

Microsoft Dynamics GP Extender needs to update it's cache with new product details error

Why the Microsoft Dynamics GP Extender Needs to Update it’s Cache Error Occurs

This is an expected result of either installing or uninstalling additional Dynamics GP modules. Extender, by default, creates a resource cache of all the windows and fields in each Dynamics GP module. This resource cache is used when you create Extender objects and allows you to attach Extender objects to specific GP windows using key fields.

The cache is created by reading all the Dynamics GP dictionaries installed on the machine that just logged in, and then builds the resource cache in SQL tables on the SQL server, and adds all the existing windows and fields to Extender.

If you install a new GP module on that machine, the next time you launch GP Extender, it will detect the new module and automatically trigger the resource cache to run, adding the new windows and fields to the Extender cache. Conversely, if you uninstall a GP module, the next time you launch GP, it will trigger the resource cache to remove those windows and fields from the table.

This behavior is also why it is recommended to have the same GP modules installed on every workstation, even if that user does not use a specific module. If you have multiple machines connected to GP, and those machines have different modules installed, they are going to “fight” over the resource cache.

If you have different GP products installed on two workstations, the first machine will build the resource cache based on the modules that are installed there. When the second machine launches, it will build the resource cache based on the modules installed on the second machine.
