If you try to log in to SmartView and find yourself with the error message, “Login failed for user ‘smartview'”, it’s possible that your password has changed, or that you lack the necessary permissions for the company database. Luckily, there’s an easy solution to get you logged back in.

Login failed for user 'smartview'

If you get this error, it means your password is not synced between SmartView and Microsoft SQL Server. Normally, SmartView generates a random password that should align with the login in Microsoft SQL, but this synchronization might fail during a reinstall.

If you recently reinstalled SmartView, that could have triggered the error message, Login failed for user ‘smartview’. Another possibility is that someone reinstalled SmartView on a different machine (which could also potentially cause a registration issue). Either way, the steps outlined below should resolve this login error.

If you’d like to watch a video explaining this, see below or click here.

Step 1:
  1. Open SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and navigate to Security > Logins. Locate the user named “smartview” (all lowercase).
  2. Once found, right-click on the user and select Properties. Go to the General tab and reset the password to something you can remember.

While in the Login Properties for the smartview login, ensure that under User Mapping, the login has access to all GP company databases (excluding DYNAMICS) and that the default schema is set to dbo. Additionally, confirm that the login is assigned the DYNGRP role for each company database.

Step 2:
  1. Open Microsoft Dynamics GP and log in as an admin user.
  2. Navigate to Dynamics GP >> Tools > SmartView > SmartView Setup and update the password for the SmartView user. Ensure that the password matches the one set in Step 1.

You should now be able to log in using your new password without seeing the error: Login failed for user ‘smartview’.
