Popdock API users function like regular users, but do not require a login or access to the main Popdock portal. API users are best used with widgets and API endpoints, with a lot of benefits coming from usage with Dynamics 365 Business Central. This article will cover some tips and tricks for Popdock API users with Business Central (BC) and how to best utilize them.

Utilizing Popdock API Users

When Popdock requires each Business Central user to have an individual token, API users become especially useful. They allow you to grant access without creating a separate Popdock account for every BC user.

Restricting list access on the main Popdock widget

In Business Central, Popdock provides a primary widget that acts as a mini portal within BC. Through this widget, you can access all your lists from the BC connector and take advantage of the customization features of Popdock.

API users offer a flexible way to manage list security and grant tailored access to BC users. For example, you can restrict access to an API user to only sales-related lists, ensuring that your sales team sees only the data they need.

API user tokens can be applied to multiple BC users

With API users, tokens can be applied to multiple users. Instead of having to create an API user for each BC user, you can create one API user with the specific permissions you need and then apply that token to multiple BC users.

This approach is ideal for a group of Business Central users who need similar access, such as a sales team. This reduces the effort of creating multiple user accounts or API users. It also removes concerns about login credentials, account lockouts, and other unnecessary complications.

API users can have all the same functionality as a regular user

API users can be granted access to common Popdock features – such as export to Excel, Favorites, and list customizations – similar to a regular user.

This allows them to work with the lists in the main widget without being able to login or complex security steps. This gives your Business Central users access to Popdock’s full extent while maintaining control and reducing errors.
