Login failed for user SmartConnect. Reason: The password of the account has expired.

When I launch SmartConnect onprem, it fails with the error:

Login failed for user SmartConnect. Reason: The password of the account has expired.

I tried to reset my credentials using the configuration tool, however it gives the same error when trying to set the SmartConnect instance as Active.

SmartConnect 21 does not currently have any sort of “password policy settings” that would cause this error.

Instead, because we note that it comes from the “SmartConnect” user, this is the SmartConnect user that SmartConnect 2018 or SmartConnect 21 would log in with in SQL Server to connect to the SmartConnect database.

Looking at the SQL Server Login for the SmartConnect user, we notice that the “Enforce password policy” and “Enforce password expiration” checkboxes are marked.

The password policy is the Windows Password policy set up on the domain that the SQL is authenticating against. By having these checkboxes marked, all SQL Accounts will enforce that policy as well.

The solution to this problem is either:

1: If changing these settings is within company policy, for this account unmark both checkboxes. The SQL user SmartConnect would be able to log into SQL again and be able to launch SmartConnect successfully.

2: If it is not possible per company policy, then the only resolution would be to change the SQL password for this SQL SmartConnect user in this window.

Because this password has now changed in SQL, you would then need to use the SmartConnect Configuration tool to update the stored SmartConnect SQL password to the new value.
