Whether you have already moved or are planning on moving from Dynamics GP to another system, you may have concerns. How will you access your historical data?

This article series will focus on how you can easily access Dynamics GP historical data after moving to another system using Popdock, the virtual integration tool from eOne Solutions.

The concern: Accessing historical data after a migration

Migrating to a new system can feel like a big undertaking. If you have concerns about the move and how your team will still have access to the 1, 5, 10, 20, or more years of data you have in Dynamics GP, you’re in the right place.

In this series, we will discuss the following historical data concerns:

  • How Dynamics GP won’t migrate to most systems.
  • Why it may not be desirable to bring all data.
  • How to restructure a new system.

Dynamics GP doesn’t migrate to most systems

No matter which system you move to after Dynamics GP, not all of your data will make that trip, nor should it.

It may not be desirable to bring all data

In some cases, companies are working with 20 years of data. Whether you’re working with a few years or decades of data, bringing all that data over to the new system may be unnecessary. The more data you choose to move to the new system, the more time and money it will cost you. It will also run slower, altering its performance.

In any migration, it’s rare that a company would want all its old data moved to a new system. When preparing for a migration, it’s important to conduct a data review on your old system so that only relevant data gets moved to the new system. This will save you time and money and help the new system’s performance.

Not all of your historical data is meaningful or necessary anymore. Some of that information will no longer be relevant to your product offerings or business. You will likely only want to access a portion of the historical data.

Restructuring a new system

Moving to a new system is a chance to evaluate how you did things before and how you should change past procedures.

A common example of this is account restructuring. Some of the newer systems you’re moving to will often have more dimensions. In Dynamics GP, you had segments for your accounts, but now you’re going to have dimensions. Take the time to restructure how you do all of that. Many people will restructure how they do their vendor IDs, customer IDs, etc.

One of the biggest problems people face is being able to connect and access their Dynamics GP history because it’s an old system. Another problem is accessing the data they need if they haven’t transferred all the data to their new system through a traditional migration. These are just a few of the problems we will be addressing and solving with Popdock in this article series.

Through virtual integration with Popdock, it is entirely possible and easy to:
  • Leave old systems behind and turn off old SQL Servers.
  • Have easy, quick access to historical data whenever you need to see it without having to transfer that data to your new system.
