Overview

This article addresses the issue of SmartConnect perpetual licenses being converted to SAAS licenses. It explains the cause of the issue, how to identify the license type, and provides a workaround to revert back to a perpetual license.

Issue Description

If you are receiving errors such as:

  • “No products for this customer id.”
  • “We were unable to reset your email.”
  • “We couldn’t find an account with that email and password.”

This is being caused by your SmartConnect perpetual license being converted to a SAAS license. With a perpetual license, user accounts and passwords are stored locally in the SmartConnect SQL database. The SAAS license stores user accounts and passwords on the eOne UAM cloud servers.

Cause of License Conversion

The license type typically changes when a new workstation is installed and the SmartConnect configuration utility is run to select the correct instance. Upon launching the configuration utility, it connects to the internet and converts the machine from a perpetual license to a SAAS license.

Identifying License Type

You can determine if a machine is using a perpetual or SAAS license by checking the SmartConnect 21 login screen:

  • SAAS License: The login screen has a “Forgotton Password” link.
  • Perpetual License: The login screen does not have a “Forgotton Password link.

Synchronizing Users

To synchronize local users to SAAS users, you must be on SmartConnect version 21.1.0.1567 or above. Follow the instructions in the article: Synchronizing SmartConnect 21 Users after changing license from Perpetual to SAAS.

Workaround for Perpetual License

If upgrading all machines to a newer version is not feasible, you can use the following workaround to keep the existing perpetual license:

Steps:
  1. Locate a Machine with a Perpetual License:
    • Launch SmartConnect and check for the absence of the “Forgotten Password” link on the login screen.
  2. Copy Configuration File:
    • On the machine with a perpetual license, navigate to C:\Program Files\eOne Solutions.
    • Locate the file named eOne.SmartConnectConfig.sce
    • Copy this file to the machine with the SAAS license, overwriting the existing file.
  3. Login:
    • The machine will now use a perpetual license and allow login using the existing usernames and passwords in the local SmartConnect database.
Installing new workstations with Perpetual License

To install a new machine with a perpetual license

  1. Run the SmartConnect installer.
  2. Do Not launch the SmartConnect configuration utility.
  3. Copy the eOne.SmartConnectConfig.sce file from a machine with a perpetual license to the new machine.
Limitations

This workaround cannot be used for creating a new instance of SmartConnect or moving SmartConnect from one server to another. In such cases, you need to run the configuration utility and upgrade all machines to version 21.1.0.1567 or above to synchronize the users.

Conclusion

By following the steps outlined in this article, you can revert machines back to using a perpetual license and avoid unexpected license conversions. For further assistance, refer to the synchronization article or contact support.
