Setting up the SmartConnect web service in IIS7 on Windows Server 2008.

The settings in IIS7 differ from IIS6 and as a result there are different steps that need to be followed.

Once the SmartConnect installer has finished and the SmartConnect web service is installed on the IIS7 machine, it needs to be configured. First, the ASP.NET components need to be installed for IIS7. Go to Control Panel – Programs and Features – Turn Windows Features on or off. This should open the Server Manager window. Expand the Roles folder on the left and right-click on Web Server (ISS) and select Add Role Services. Expand the Web Server – Application Development folders. Check the box next to ASP.NET and hit Next and then Install. Next, open up IIS Manager and expand the – Sites – SmartConnect virtual directory. Highlight the SmartConnect application (the globe with the files in front of it) and select the Features view at the bottom of the window. Double click the Authentication icon under the IIS section of the screen. Change the status of Anonymous Authentication to Enabled. Then right click Anonymous Authentication and select the “Edit…” drop down. In the window that opens, place the username and password of the user you used to install the eConnect COM+ object. You must include the domain on the username. So if the username is Administrator, and the domain is CONTOSO, you will type CONTOSOAdministrator in the username field. Once this is done perform an IIS Reset to commit the changes. To confirm that the web service is working select the SmartConnect application globe in IIS Manager again and select the Content button at the bottom of the window. Right-click the SmartConnect.asmx file that is now displayed in IIS and click browse. A SmartConnect page should load, confirming that the web service is set up correctly.
