Claude Skills are packages of specialized instructions that Claude loads automatically when relevant, so you don’t have to re-explain the same context every conversation. Once you have downloaded a .skill file, the steps below outline how to import it into your Claude account so it’s ready to use right away.
Prerequisites:
- A Claude account (Free, Pro, Max, Team, or Enterprise plan).
- Code execution and file creation enabled on your account.
- A
.skillfile downloaded to your computer.
Step 1: Navigate to Customize > Skills in Claude
1. Go to claude.ai and sign in to your account.
2. In the left sidebar, click Customize.
3. Click Skills from the options that appear.

Step 2: Upload a Skill
1. Select the + button in the Skills panel.
2. Select + Create skill from the menu.
3. Select Upload a skill and then select the .skill file you downloaded to your computer.
4. Select Open to upload it.
Once uploaded, your skill will appear in your personal Skills list.

Step 3: Toggle the Skill On
Uploaded skills are off by default. You will need to enable them before Claude will use them.
1. Find your skill in the Skills list.
2. Click the toggle next to the skill name to turn it on.
At this point, your skill is active. Claude will automatically use it whenever your request matches what the skill is designed for — no extra prompting required.

Step 4: Test It in a New Chat
1. Start a new chat in Claude.
2. Send a message that falls within the skill’s area of expertise. For example, if you uploaded the Popdock Script Translator skill, try: “write me a calculated field that shows an aging bucket based on due date.”
3. Review Claude’s response to confirm it is using the skill’s patterns, syntax, and output format correctly. Make follow-up messages to clean up or fine-tune the result.
If Claude does not appear to be using the skill, confirm the toggle is enabled in Customize > Skills and that code execution is turned on in your account settings.
