SmartConnect Dynamics CRM painfully slow

I am running an integration from GP to CRM. We are seeing speeds of 1 record per second or higher. That seems painfully slow. Any ideas?

We found in some cases that a Restriction using scripting is required when importing new records to check that the record doesn’t already exist in CRM to speed up the process.
