SmartConnect 2012 Install Cross 2 Domains

WT asked 10 years ago
Hi,
Our servers are hosted on a different server on a different domain. How can one install SmartConnect 2012 to connect to a hosted environment?  How can we complete the required SQL connections to make use of this product?
Thanks,

Hi WT

I need a bit more information on this.
Is GP or CRM hosted?
Is the SQL machine where SmartConnect is going to run hosted?

Most of our connectors take a domain, username and password to connect so this should be fine.

It just depends on where SmartConnect will be installed.

Hi Ruaan,

Sure, it would be both the GP application server and the GP SQL server that would be hosted. But they will be on separate domains.

Our current setup is as follows.

Server A: GP Application Server where SmartConnect is installed. (Domain 1)
Server B: GP SQL Server (Domain 2)

When installing SmartConnect on Server A,

1) Which login id and user do I need to log in as and what type of permissions does this User require on Server B?

2) There is a user that gets created on the Server B called SmartConnect but when I
try and log into SmartConnect from Server A, I get a User not found error message.

3) Do I need to make sure the windows services are running on Server A? If so, how do I go about doing this?

4) Does SmartConnect require econnect to be installed first?  If so what user does that create on the SQL box and what permissions is required for this user?

Thanks again,

WT

When you install SmartConnect for the first time it will create the SmartConnect database and user for you automatically. SmartConnect uses this SmartConnect user to connect to the database. At install time it will ask you to choose a password for the SmartConnect user.

When you run SmartConnect for the first time it will use the current windows user and create him/her as the first admin user in SmartConnect. This is purely for SmartConnect security and it does not use this user for any login at this time.

Now that I have kind off explained how the install and run works for the first time lets answer your questions.
1) Which login id and user do I need to log in as and what type of permissions does this User require on Server B?
As specified above it will use the SmartConnect user that gets created.
2) There is a user that gets created on the Server B called SmartConnect but when I try and log into SmartConnect from Server A, I get a User not found error message.
You should not get this error, maybe the password is incorrect. If you do not know what this password is, please change the password for the SmartConnect user in SQL and re-install SmartConnect.
3) Do I need to make sure the windows services are running on Server A? If so, how do I go about doing this?
The SmartConnect windows service only needs to run if you are planning on scheduling maps.
4) Does SmartConnect require econnect to be installed first?  If so what user does that create on the SQL box and what permissions is required for this user?
Yes, eConnect needs to be installed before SmartConnect is installed, but there is an option to install eConnect from the SmartConnect installer.
eConnect uses windows authentication, so there needs to be trust between the 2 domains so that the users from domain A will have access to SQL on Domain B

If you need anything else please let me know.
