Running SmartConnect from Excel

Andy Baker asked 8 years ago
Anyone know how I can run a SmartConnect Map from Excel? I don’t want to create a SmartConnect excel template as that forces a header and line arrangement, all I want to be able to do is press a button in excel that will run a map just as if the user had opened the map in SmartConnect and clicked run. Is this possible? – I have web services up and running. Thanks.

You can download our Excel Add-In which will let you run a map with the push of a button.

If you are using SmartConnect 2013 or greater and Excel 2010 or Excel 2013 you can use our Excel 2013 Add-In.

32-Bit version

64-Bit version

Here is the link to our online documention that explains how to set up and use the Add-In.

From our downloads page you can choose the product of SmartConnect and Category of AddIns to see the other available versions depending on your version of SmartConnect and Excel.

Hi Lorren,

Thanks for your help – I have downloaded and installed the add-in, and also installed and configured the WCF Rest Service. In excel I have configured the add-in and it will validate successfully, however when I try to run the Map I receive an error:
The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error.

Any troubleshooting advice would be gratefully received.

Go out to the eOne Online documentation and follow the instructions to make sure it's all set up properly.  Make sure you can browse to the site from the machine where you have the Excel Add In installed as well.

I have followed the instructions outlined in the online documentation and can successfully browse to SmartConnect.svc, SmartConnect.svc/validate and SmartConnect.svc/validatesession.  Unfortunately I still receive the error, "Error connecting to the web service: The remote server returned an error: (500) Internal Server Error."

Any additional assistance will be greatly appreciated.

HI Mark,
I’m also getting this error (Smartconnect 2016) and had tried the same troubleshooting steps before hand. Did you get a resolution in the end?
Thanks Kirstie
