First GP Upgrade since purchasing SmartConnect

We are getting ready for our first upgrade since purchasing SmartConnect. We are currently on GP2013R2. We are upgrading to GP2016. We are installing GP2016 on a new server. Can I run two instances of SmartConnect under one license (one on the new/test server and one one the current server?) Do I need a different version of SmartConnect for GP2016? I need to make sure all the maps are working before the new/test server goes live.

SC 2014 doesn’t track “instances” so you can install it and use it as many instances as you like.
SC 2014 R2 and above require registration in our system and will give you three (3) instances.

I would assume so as only SC 2016 is compatible with GP 2016.
