Excel Source Columns not available on Pre Tasks as Variables

Hi,
I have a map to create Projects from Excel Source, but eConnect fails if Contract status is not Estimate(but GP allows to create Project with Contract Open). So, I have to update the status to 4 through SQL on Pre Map and then update back to 1 Post Map Run. But Contract No from Source Excel is not available as Variable to use in the pre map task. Please help.

To truly answer the question, the Source data is never available on a Pre-Map Task because SmartConnect has not read the data at that point.
Once it has read the data, it’s available for a Pre-Map SQL Validation or on any document task.
Once the map is complete, post map tasks, the data again, is not available.

Never mind. I noticed that it is available on Run Before Document Task, but just not on Run Before Map task. I think I can manage with it. Reason I asked is, previously map was just for one contract and I had it hard coded on the pre map task, now contract number coming from Source file, so I had to change it.
