Data Security during upload to CRM

We just started using SmartConnect to integrate from a secure web-based system to our on-premise GP software. We are considering an integration from this system to Microsoft CRM online (we haven’t yet implemented or purchased CRM online). My Director of IT has some concerns regarding the security of the data during the transfer. This just came up during a demo of CRM and the person giving the demo wasn’t that familiar with SmartConnect and didn’t have an answer, although he plans to get back to us. In the meantime, I thought it might be better to go straight to the source. Can someone direct me to some documentation on how secure the data is during the integration? I found several on setting up security, but that was more about having access to the integrations. Thank you for any info you can provide.
