Creating Dynamocs CRM Online Connection

Chris asked 5 years ago
I\’ve managed to get the trial to connect to a remote database (source) but need to setup a connection to Dynamics CRM which will be the destination. The CRM is online via office 365 and is 2016 update (8.1).In Smart Connect I have gone to Maintenance -> CRM Connector group -> Manage Instances -> AddIn the dialog I\’m inputting the following:An Instance Name and description (my descriptive choices I believe).Server address as crm4.dynamics.comAuthentication Type as Microsoft Online FederationTicking both Use SSL and CredentialsThe username of my online user (admin@mycrm.onmicrosoft.com) and the PasswordLeaving Domain blankClick Refresh. I get the error:\”Failed to connect to the CRM server : Object reference not set to an instance of an object\”Is there an obvious reason why this is failing?

Make sure that Windows Identity Foundation 3.0 is loaded on this machine.
Not sure what changed or where but we have seen that using CRM Online and if you don’t have the above loaded then we just get this “object reference” error instead of the typical .NET error that we’ve seen saying that SC cannot find the specific Windows Identity Foundation 3.0 assembly.

Hi Patrick,
Thanks for the response. I’ve added the WIF 3.5 feature (it’s a 2016 server) but still get the error. Is there a standalone installer for 3.0 as I can’t find one.
Thanks,
Chris

Hi Patrick,
Today it seems to be working! I don’t know what changed over night but I’ll bear in mind that I’ll need WIF going forward.
Thanks,
Chris
