What user credentials are used when the ... :

SmartConnect client connects to Microsoft Dynamics GP - When connecting to Dynamics GP the credentials used to access the Dynamics GP databases differ depending on the setting of the Dynamics GP setup window. If the use credentials checkbox has been selected and the user details defined, the credentials defined in the setup window are used to connect. If the use credentials checkbox has not been selected the credentials of the current Windows Active Directory user are used to connect to the Dynamics GP databases. As AD user security is different from GP user security, AD user security should be added to GP company databases in order for users to connect successfully. Note: when querying data from GP the credentials supplied in the query connection string used on the map are used to connect to the relevant GP company database.
The SmartConnect client pushes data to GP via eConnect - When sending data to Dynamics GP, eConnect is used. The windows user that is used by the eConnect process differs depending of the Dynamics GP setup in SmartConnect.
oIf ignore proxy server is not selected on the Dynamics GP setup window the credentials of the user running the eConnect windows service are used to send data to Dynamics GP.
oIf ignore proxy server is selected on the Dynamics GP setup window the credentials of the user currently logged into SmartConnect are used to send the data to Dynamics GP.
SmartConnect client connects to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4 (AD & IFD) - If default credentials have been specified in CRM setup those credentials are used when connecting to CRM. If defaults credentials have not been specified the credentials of the current AD user are used to connect to the CRM 4 web service. See here for more info.
SmartConnect client connects to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4 (Online) - As CRM Online requires Microsoft Passport Authentication, default credentials must be defined in CRM setup in order to connect to CRM Online. If no default credentials are defined users will not be able to connect to CRM Online. See here for more info.
SmartConnect client connects to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 (AD & IFD) - If default credentials have been specified in CRM 2011 setup those credentials are used when connecting to CRM. If default credentials have not been specified the credentials of the current AD user are used to connect to the CRM 2011 web service. See here and here for more information.
SmartConnect client connects to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 (Online) - As CRM 2011 Online requires Microsoft Live ID Authentication, default credentials must be defined in CRM 2011 setup in order to connect to CRM online. These credentials will then be used by all users to connect to CRM Online. See here and here for more information.
SmartConnect client connects to Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2011 (Online Federation) - As CRM 2011 (supplied as part of Office 365) uses an Office 365 user, default credentials must be defined in CRM 2011 setup in order to connect to CRM. These credentials will then be used by all users to connect to CRM online. See here and here for more information.
SmartConnect client connects to SalesForce.com - The credentials used for access to SalesForce may differ depending on the functions that are begin accessed.
oFor non administrative functions if no default details have been defined within SalesForce setup, each user will be prompted for their SalesForce credentials the first time they attempt to access SalesForce information. In this instance users may also maintain their access credentials through the SalesForce Login Details screen. If default credentials have been defined in the default security area of the SalesForce setup screen, individual credentials are ignored and the default credentials used to connect to SalesForce.
oFor administrative functions if no default administrative details have been defined within SalesForce setup, each user will be prompted for their SalesForce credentials the first time they attempt to access SalesForce information. In this instance users may also maintain their access credentials through the SalesForce Login Details screen. A list of administrative functions using the administrative credentials can be found here.
SmartConnect client connects to File System - When SmartConnect connect to the file system to either access data source information or write destination information, the credentials of the current windows AD user are used to determine if the user has appropriate security to read/write to that area of the file system.
SmartConnect ASP.NET or WCF REST service runs a Map - When the SmartConnect web service runs a map the credentials of the user that was defined as the impersonate user during SmartConnect web service installation will be used. This means that when the SmartConnect web service is used to update Microsoft CRM 4, Microsoft CRM 2011 or SalesForce the user that runs the web service must also have the appropriate level of security for the destination system. For service calls that update Microsoft Dynamics GP the settings on Dynamics GP setup window are used to determine the user that runs the eConnect process to update Dynamics GP (see SmartConnect client pushes data to GP via eConnect)
SmartConnect Windows Service runs a Map - When the SmartConnect windows service runs a map the credentials of the user that was defined as the user to run the service account will be used to run the Map. This means that when the SmartConnect windows service is used to update Microsoft CRM or SalesForce the user that runs the windows service must also have the appropriate level of security for the destination system. For service calls that update Microsoft Dynamics GP the settings on Dynamics GP setup window are used to determine the user that runs the eConnect process to update Dynamics GP (see SmartConnect client pushes data to GP via eConnect)
The Excel Add-In pushes data to the SmartConnect ASP.NET service - The credentials of the user selected as the impersonate user on the SmartConnect web service installation is used to access SmartConnect functionality when data is pushed from Excel to the web service.  This means that when the SmartConnect web service is used to update Microsoft CRM or SalesForce the user that runs the web service must also have the appropriate level of security for the destination system.  For service calls that update Microsoft Dynamics GP the settings on Dynamics GP setup window are used to determine the user that runs the eConnect process to update Dynamics GP (see SmartConnect client pushes data to GP via eConnect)
The Excel Add-In pushes data to the SmartConnect WCF REST service - The credentials of the user defined within the Excel add-in are used to connect to the WCF REST service and are validated according to the WCF REST security settings. The credentials of the user selected as the impersonate user on the SmartConnect WCF REST service installation are then used to access SmartConnect functionality.
